I’ll fess up from the start that this item was totally brought to my attention by The World According to Alexandra’s recent blog post. Please tell me you have seen the popular fashion trend the “face kini.” The name might sound like it is all fun and games but the visual will lead you to hide your valuables! Fashion culture has always differed between countries, but this is one trend that I don’t see migrating across the pond.
In some locations of the world a tan indicates your status level as those who are privileged don’t work outside and therefore remain quite tan. Obviously this isn’t a message that made it to anyone who frequents the Jersey Shore. In an effort to ensure that they can enjoy the sand and water, without returning home looking like they dropped a class in the status food chain, the “face kini” was created. Although it is a wonderful way to fight any risk of skin cancer from over tanning, I’m lead to wonder how comfortable could this really be.
Being from Florida I know that the point for most people who go to the beach is to dress in a scantily clad way that allows one to achieve a tan, but I can understand that other locations have a different point of view. I’m still trying to understand the science behind wearing this and not overheating, but that could be because I’m used to beach trips that involve high humidity levels with the harsh sun rays. “Face kini,” you have intrigued me but I don’t see myself wearing one any time soon.
