Production life comes with some pretty glorious mo

Production life comes with some pretty glorious moments, but it also comes with plenty of challenges. Despite all the years spent in college, I think my best lessons for handling challenges under extreme pressure came from my time spent on stage.

You want something handled quickly and calmly under pressure, all while smiling as it gets done, hire an ex-dancer and/or theater performer. Theatrical performers and dance swings can do all of that while also analyzing all the potential outcomes of every possible decision before you’ve finished your sentence.

It’s mental gymnastics they’ve been specially crafted for and they were trained to do it all in the heat of the moment without anyone in the audience knowing what’s going on. Learning multiple tracks for one show, swapping between them at times, or even jumping into a show after it’s already begun is a normal Tuesday for them.

Bonus points if they retired from performing into a show calling position because then they become a secret weapon. No one handles a contingency quite like a stage manager can!

They communicate effectively and calmly across departments, mitigate risks in the moment, and have an eye on safety all while making sure the show goes on for the audience.

When you’re looking for the hidden secret weapons of the workforce, look at the former performing arts kids and I promise you’ll find yourself the unicorn you can rely on in the worst of times.

School is out so the boys are home with me, my day is stacked with back-to-back meetings, and there’s an RFP response deadline looming over me.

There was something so nice about walking past this beautiful Chihuly glass installation multiple times a day as I passed through the Bellagio on my way to and from Caesars Palace a couple weeks back.

As I passed the Bellagio spring garden exhibit and smelled the flowers, instead of all the smoke from the casino, I knew I was almost back to convention center. It was such a welcome experience each day I was there.
